Our minds overflow with the sarsaparilla homebrew of the 1800s -- the Victorian vampires, the Lincolnalia, the pop-chart jug bands. The late 19th century is on TV a lot: railroad barons in the West, amoral gold miners in the Klondike, Hatfields vs. McCoys in the hollers, serial killers with handlebar mustaches leaving slit-throated corpses to be examined by muttonchopped sleuths in steampunk notions of London and New York. Enough already.
